Over 1000 Borough residents flocked to York House in Twickenham last Saturday, 30 January, to attend a council organised event celebrating cultural harmony and diversity in Richmond upon Thames.
The Mayor of Richmond upon Thames Cllr Celia Hodges said:
“The recent national place survey showed that 98% of ethnic minority residents in our borough feel that it is a place where people from different backgrounds treat each other with respect. This exceptionally high mark allows us to claim that not only as the same survey confirmed we are the best place to live but we are also one of the most harmonious. Saturday was about celebrating and encouraging our diversity.
Deputy Mayor Ben Khosa added:
“It was fantastic to see our vision of the day unfolding so perfectly before us with such diverse nationalities visiting and experiencing the various stalls and arts and craft on display. It was mostly standing room only with visitors engrossed in, and clearly enjoying the event.
“While we opened our doors to the various cultures on display I hope at the same time residents would have thoroughly enjoyed the day and made useful connections. I hope they will further open their hearts and minds to cultures different to theirs and thereby step up community harmony and further enhance the quality of life in our already fantastic Borough.
“My thanks go out to the Arts Service and The Mayors secretary for their hard work to make the event a success and of course to all those who took part and visited on the day.”
