Highway improvements
For all schools
School Travel Planning addresses both the perceived and actual barriers to sustainable travel. Through consultation and engagement, schools work with their wider school community to identify whether actual hazards exist on walking and cycling routes to school.
Where hazards are identified, discussions between the School Travel Champion, School Travel Advisor and relevant stakeholders will determine whether there is an actual need for further investigation. Schools are encouraged to detail the outcome of this discussion in their STP.
Like all highway improvement works, undertaking the works is always subject to funding and includes stages of planning and consultation.
If your school has identified actual barriers to sustainable travel, please to talk to your School Travel Advisor and incorporate it into your STP. Only schools with valid STP’s are considered for such works.
Depending on the nature of the concern/hazard and available funding, further investigation can result usually in one of four outcomes:
- feasibility study required
- works to be placed on a scheme waiting list
- works to be scheduled
- unsuitable for further investigation
Examples of previous STP highway improvement works
The Vineyard School
Through their School Travel Plan, The Vineyard School identified the junction of Kings, Park and Church Roads to be unsafe due to poor visibility and safety. This junction will be upgraded to improve the visibility and safety of pupils on their way to and from school.
Darell Primary School
Through their School Travel Plan, Darell School identified the sightlines at the junction of Darell Road and Chilton Road as an issue for pedestrian walking to and from school. As a result the junction has been improved by the footways being widened, which in turn has improved the sightlines and reduced the crossing distance for pedestrians. The carriageway has also been resurfaced, tactile paving, to assist visually impaired has been introduced and the street lighting has been improved. View a schematic of Darell Road

The Falcon’s Preparatory School for Boys
As a result of issues raised in their School Travel Plan funding has been provided to assist with upgrading the street lighting along Kew Foot Road to improve the safety of pupils and staff.
