Crossovers

Access from the public highway to a private driveway or other area will require a properly constructed crossover to be built. The purpose of a crossover is to provide easier access for vehicles and to strengthen the footway to allow vehicles to pass over without causing damage to either the footway or the numerous services usually located under the surface.

Applications for a crossover should be made to the Highway Management Group who will need to make a site inspection and seek guidance from the Transport Planning Group if there is likely to be any road safety implications and to the Arboricultural Group if a proposal is close to an existing tree.

In some circumstances a crossover can only be approved if it has planning permission further details regarding this can be found in the ‘information pack’ and from the Planning and Building Control Department.

In the case of an application for a crossover on a ‘Trunk Road’ (A316 or A205) then these are dealt with by Transport for London through their agents WSP (telephone 020 8838 9900). However, Planning Permission will still be determined by this authority.

If approved an estimate for the work will be sent to the applicant together with a form of acceptance which is to be signed and returned if the applicant wishes to proceed with the application.

In some circumstances a crossover can only be approved if it has planning permission further details regarding this can be found in the ‘information pack’ and from the Planning and Building Control Department.
