Roads and highways
The Highway Management Group is responsible for
- Maintaining the public highway network in a safe condition.
- Maintaining records on the condition of the public highway and investigating third party insurance claims.
- Co-ordinating the work of Utility companies on the highway.
- Supervising developers constructing new roads for adoption.
- Supervising the construction of new schemes designed by the Transport Planning sections of the Council.
- Providing a 'client' function for public conveniences, street trees and the Council's cleansing service.
- Maintaining and improving the Borough's street lighting.
- Carrying out routine inspections and maintenance of publicly maintained bridges and retaining walls.
- Undertaking structural checking of designs submitted to the Planning Department.

Network management
- Co-ordination of work on the public highway.
- Maintenance of the register of adopted roads.
- Network condition survey.
- Co-ordination of vehicle crossing construction.
Inspection and compliance
- Monitor street cleansing.
- Routine highway inspections.
- Enforcement of highway legislation.
Highway construction
- Supervise Council's contractors.
- Inspect new work being undertaken by developers.
- Co-ordinate the programme of maintenance works.
Street lighting
- Highway street lighting maintenance.
- Design street lighting improvement schemes.
- Supervise street lighting construction.
- Provide lighting advice to other departments.
Structural engineering
- Inspect and maintain public structures on the highway, including retaining walls and bridges
- Check structural calculations for planning and building control applications.
- Advise other departments on structural matters.
