Glossary of some common terms used in Community Safety

Community safety has developed its own jargon, much of it in the form of abbreviations or acronyms. There follows an explanation of some commonly used acronyms. Alternatively, have a look at our CSP Plan 2008-11 in which we've incorporated more abbreviations and definitions.

ABC - Acceptable Behaviour Contract

A voluntary agreement with a perpetrator of anti-social behaviour, which sets out the level of behaviour expected of them.Any breach of this agreement can lead to the Partnership seeking an Anti-social Behaviour Order (ASBO). The contracts are primarily aimed at young people aged between 10 and 18 but can also be used in relation to adults.

ACPO - Association of Chief Police Officers

The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) leads and coordinates the direction and development of the police service in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In times of national need ACPO, on behalf of all chief officers, coordinates the strategic policing response.

ASBO - Anti-Social Behaviour Order

An order by a magistrate which prohibits the defendant from doing anything described in the order.

CDZ - Controlled Drinking Zone

Controlled Drinking Zones are areas designated by a council in which there has been nuisance, annoyance or disorder associated with the consumption of alcohol, where the Police have additional powers to stop people drinking in public.

CPP - Community and Police Partnership

The Community and Police Partnership is an independent organisation representing local people's views on policing matters.

CPS - Crown Prosecution Service

The CPS is responsible for prosecuting people in England and Wales charged by police with a criminal offence.

CSP - Community Safety Partnership (formerly called CDRPs)

Set up through the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 , CSPs must audit crime and disorder in their areas and set up a strategy to reduce it every three years.  Originally called Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs), most CDRPs became CSPs when their functions were merged with those of Drug Action Teams.

DIP - Drug Intervention Programme

This is a 3-year programme to develop and integrate measures for directing adult drug-misusing offenders out of crime and into treatment

PCSO - Police Community Support Officer

PCSOs are civilian members of police staff who have been trained to engage with their local community. Although they are not Police Officers, they do have a range of designated powers.  Each Safer Neighbourhood Team usually consists of a Police Sergeant, two Police Constables and three PCSOs.

PLG - Police Liaison Group

Each ward in Richmond borough has a Police Liason Group. They meet regularly and give members of the public the opportunity to voice their crime concerns and to set policing priorities for their local Safer Neighbourhood Team.

MARAC - Multi-agency Risk Assessment Conference

The MARAC is part of a coordinated community response to domestic abuse, incorporating representatives from statutory, community and voluntary agencies working with victims/survivors, children and the alleged perpetrator.

MPA - Metropolitan Police Authority

The Metropolitan Police Authority is an organisation set up to scrutinise and support the work of the Metropolitan Police Service.

SOCA - Serious Organised Crime Agency

SOCA tackles serious organised crime affecting the UK, including Class A drugs, human trafficking, gun crime, fraud, computer crime and money laundering.

SNT - Safer Neighbourhood Team

Safer Neighbourhood Teams are dedicated to your community and are additional to other policing teams and units in London.

YOT - Youth Offending Team

The YOT co-ordinates the provision of youth justice services locally and carries out the functions assigned to them in the Youth Justice Plan.
