Primary School Sportshall Athletics Festival - 12 and 13 March 2009

This year’s indoor athletics festival run by the Richmond Sports Development team was held at Hampton School on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 March 2009.

22 schools (264 pupils) took part in the festival, which involves adapted track and field events including jumping, throwing and running competitions.

50 year eight pupils from Hampton school were responsible for officiating all of the events across the two days. The students demonstrated enthusiasm and efficiency throughout the competition.

Thursday saw nine small schools compete to become 2009 champions. After the field events Barnes were out in the lead, closely followed by St Elizabeth’s. It was down to the relays in the latter half of the morning to determine the winners.

Athletes took part in over under, obstacle and sprint relays. St Elizabeth’s were chasing all the way to the finish line, but Barnes were crowned 2009 small schools champions.

After an exciting start to the festival we were expecting to witness more athletic talent on Friday. Athletes kicked off by competing in six field events, which included the triple jump, javelin and speed bounce.

At half time Stanley and Chase Bridge were level on points. This lead to a tense set of relay’s, with schools battling it out to increase their scores. However Stanley pulled away from the rest of the field to become 2009 large school champions.
