London Youth Games 2005 report

Photo of a cyclist competing at the London outh Games Over 250 young athletes from the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames have competed in the 28th London Youth Games over June and July 2005. The Richmond team is organised by the Borough.s Sports Development Team. The games provide young Londoners with the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports and get a foot on the sporting ladder. The event also helps to develop and encourage young athletes sporting talent and the Richmond team certainly played their part.

The culmination of the event began with the London Mini Youth Games on Thursday 30 June at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

Richmond Council's Cabinet Member for Sport, Cllr Roger Avins attended the event and said: .The Youth Games provide a tremendous opportunity for the cream of our borough.s young sporting talent. Hundreds of youngsters, supportive parents and dozens of enthusiastic coaches have given their time over many months preparing for what is Europe.s largest youth sporting event, boasting more competitors than the Olympics, with more than 21,000 young Londoners taking part in 26 different sports events.
