Balfour Beatty London Youth Games 2010 report

Team Richmond place 4th in the 2010 London Youth Games...our best result since the Games began 33 years ago!

The Stoop was the perfect back-drop to host the 2010 London Youth Games celebration evening…

Over 200 people attended the reception held by Richmond Council’s Sports Development Team on Wednesday 14 July. The evening provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of all those competitors who have represented the borough at the 2010 Games.

This was another very special year for Team Richmond. With 3 golds and 26 top ten placings Richmond finished in 4th place out of the 32 London Boroughs and the City of London. This is Richmond’s best result since the Games started 33 years ago.

The Team Richmond 2010 Campaign began back in January with the cricket competitions and came to a close two weeks ago at Crystal Palace.

Harlequin’s players Chris Brooker and Karl Dixon were on hand to present the awards and praise Richmond competitors for their achievements.

Richmond’s Mini Games teams brought home a number of medals. This included gold for netball and bronze for hockey.

In the Main Games we had a number of notable performances, with golds in kayak sprints, rowing and girls' hockey. Team Richmond were also crowned 2010 regatta champions!

Dave Francis, teacher at Clarendon School won the volunteer of the year award for his involvement with disability teams. Emma Beckinsale picked up the Main Games Team Manager award for all of her hard work with the Aquathlon team and Ali Costello took home the Mini Games Team Manager award for the netball.

Schools participation was recognised with Hampton School winning the boys' trophy and Waldegrave School winning the girls'. The overall contribution award went to Walbrook Rowing Club for their continued support and achievements.

As the evening came to a close, the Mayor of Richmond, Councillor David Marlow, accepted a cheque for £4500 from Harlequins to contribute towards the 2011 London Youth Games.

It was a fantastic evening of celebration for Team Richmond 2010.
