Tree work applications
Planning Permission
Many trees are protected by a tree preservation order which means that, in general, you need the council's consent to prune or fell them. In addition, there are controls over many other trees in conservation areas.
You need to complete a tree work application before carrying out work to all qualifying trees mentioned above with a trunk diameter (measured at 1.5m above the ground) greater than 7.5cm. If you are unsure about the status of trees which you intend to prune or fell (or you simply require further information) you should contact us as shown below.
Help with your application
Please be specific about proposed tree works. We often have to send forms back because they are too vague, which can waste a lot of time. A proposal simply to "lop", "cut back" or "prune" does not describe the extent of the work, so please state for example "thin crown by 30%".
Comprehensive guidance on how to complete the application can be found on the Planning Portal website: Completion help notes for Form TW.
We strongly recommend that you seek advice from a tree surgeon who will provide you with a professional specification of the works needed.
A list of approved contractors for tree works can be found at the Arboricultural Association.
