The park is managed to encourage wildlife, and the banks of the Crane are home to a thriving colony of Marsh Frogs and the rare Water Vole. A cycle track runs through the park.
The western end contains the remains of an old gunpowder mill, including the Shot Tower (now known to be a lookout tower). This is a field studies centre run by the London Wildlife Trust who maintain Crane Park Island local nature reserve; it is also home to Wildlife Watch - a wildlife group for children aged between 6 and 12, which aims to encourage children to enjoy and learn about the environment in a fun and friendly atmosphere. The group runs on the last Sunday of every month from 2pm to 4pm in the Shot Tower.
