Slam
Nick Hornby
This is an unusual tale of teenage pregnancy because it’s told from the boy’s point of view. Sam has one aim: to be a skateboarder like his hero Tony Hawk. His plans are wrecked when his girlfriend becomes pregnant; particularly poignant for Sam as his mum had him when she was a teenager. The author sends him forward in time to see what his future has in store. An emotional novel with some typical Hornby humour.

Nightrise
Anthony Horowitz
The next instalment in the Power of Five series. Fourteen year old twins Jamie and Scott earn a living by performing mind-reading acts in a theatre in downtown Nevada. These are no ordinary feats as they can truly read each other’s minds. When they are tracked down by spies from the evil Nightrise Corporation and Scott is kidnapped for his powers, Jamie is forced to try to find him. Strange events result in him being propelled a thousand years into the past to a time when he is needed to help complete an ancient unfinished battle and witness the opening of the Raven’s Gate before he is able to help his brother.

A school trip to the National Gallery inspires her to research Andy Warhol and make an underground film, during which time she questions her friendships and starts a relationship with a co-worker. She would rather go to film school than to university, and has to cope with many changes in her life, not least of which is the reappearance of her previously absent father.
