gr8 txts: war stories

Here are our librarians' picks:

Emil and Karl Yankev Glatshteyn

First published in 1940, this was one of the first books for young adults to describe the early days of the Holocaust. Two boys, one Jewish, the other not, lose their home and families to the Nazis in occupied Vienna on the eve of World War II. Chilling and powerful, Emil and Karl is perhaps even more shocking today than it was on publication because its author had no idea of the horrific events still to come.

Crusade Elizabeth Laird

Nearly one thousand years ago during the wars of the Middle Eastern Crusades, two boys – one Muslim and one Christian – meet. At first excited by the prospect of adventure, they start to question the morality of war – especially Salim, as he is assisting a doctor on the battlefield. This story offers plenty of food for thought about the ongoing conflicts in the world today.
