Art internet sources

In addition to specific sites concerned with art it is now possible to access many reference books online through the services we subscribe to. Access to Oxford Reference Online, and other services is through this Libraries Department page on the website of the London Borough Of Richmond Upon Thames. More information can be found on the Online Borrower Services pages.

To access Online Borrower Services you need to be a Richmond library member. You then use your library card number plus a 4 digit PIN number. (Please ask at any Richmond library if you need either.)

Oxford Reference Online

The Oxford Reference Online allows access to the following titles:

  • A Dictionary of Architecture
  • The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art and Artists
  • The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms
  • The Oxford Dictionary of Art
  • A Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Art
  • The Oxford Companion to Western Art   

Oxford Reference provides links to websites checked and approved by them, all available from every subject area and each book within the collection

Also available through Online Borrower Services is Grove Art Online. This provides web access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art (1996, 34 vols.) with ongoing additions of new material and updates to the text, plus links to specialist image collections, and all the sophisticated search advantages possible with an online reference resource. Grove Art Online now also includes access to the Oxford Companion to Western Art making it an ideal source for concise, authoritative information on western art and an excellent starting point for basic information for students and scholars alike.

WWW Virtual Library

WWW Virtual Library provides a handy way to find links to national and other galleries and museums in countries around the world. It has a section devoted to art galleries.

Here you will find pages of links to all kinds of institutions, public and private, that have art information.

The internet in general

It is also always worth searching the Internet for specific people or terms. There are many search engines but Google is one of the quickest and wide-ranging. Other sites that allow access to other useful pages are:
