Private Passions for Public Pleasures
6 February - 6 June 2010
Gain an insight into the fascinating collections that have come together to make up the Richmond Borough Art Collection and learn about the collectors who donated them: collectors such as Nellie Ionides, who left Orleans House itself to the borough along with many paintings, oriental porcelain, musical instruments and antiques.
Isabel Burton, wife of the great 19th century explorer Sir Richard Burton donated gifts from his many travels and diplomatic postings, personal effects, photographs and paintings, and Leslie Paton and Raymond Gill, both Barnes and Mortlake collectors and founders of the Barnes and Mortlake History Society, who between them amassed hundreds of prints, paintings, photographs and posters all valuable additions to the local history of the borough.
Also on display in this exhibition is the detailed masterpiece Mother and Child in the Garden by Pre-Raphaelite painter Arthur Hughes. Donated by Grogan, this is the first public unveiling of the Grogan gift which includes significant 19th and 20th century works now added to the borough’s collection.
