The Gill Collection
In the year 2000 Raymond Gill (b.1912), a close friend of Leslie Paton and a founder member of the Barnes and Mortlake History Society, kindly gave 61 works to the collection. The generous gift of view of Barnes, Mortlake, East Sheen and Richmond Park includes 6 works by the 19th century amateur Emily Rebecca Prinsep.
The remainder of the collection comprises gifts and bequests from numerous individuals, some of which were left to the Borough prior to the Ionides Bequest in 1962. The collection has been augmented by purchases, but in recent years financial restrictions have made this difficult. We are now, more than ever, reliant on the generosity of individuals, such as the gift in 2001 of £1,000 by a local resident, which was used to purchase a water colour of Orleans House. In 2003, Raymond Gill gifted another 100 works to the Collection, including prints and watercolours of Barnes and Richmond.
