The Burton Collection

On the death of the famous explorer, translator and writer Sir Richard Burton in 1890, funds were to limited that his wife Lady Isabel Burton was forced to request donations in order that she could give him the resting place he had always wanted, above ground, in an Arab test. In return, she pledged a number of items to the nation. These found a permanent home at Orleans House Gallery and Richmond Local Studies Collection, when they were transferred from Camberwell Public Library in 1969.

The Burton Collection comprises books, personal effects and paintings relating to Burton's life as an explorer and diplomat overseas. Highlights include views of Burton's houses at Trieste and Damascus by Letchford and Leighton, and 2 photographic albums which capture an intimate glimpse of the Burtons' lives. The albums were complemented in 1999 by a gift of 39 glass plate negatives given to the gallery by Mrs J M Webster.

Burton's personal effects were lovingly cherished by Isabel. From left to right: "housewife" sewing kit, pistol, fez, slippers, and a bead necklace presented to him by King of Dahome.
