Past Developments in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames
Kew Riverside, Kew
Amelia House in Strand Drive, Kew, is the result of a partnership between Richmond Council, Thames Valley Housing Association and the construction company, St George West London. A total of 48 new homes were built on this site, half of which are for affordable rent and will be let to borough residents from the Council’s waiting and transfer lists. The remainder are being provided under the New Build Home Buy Scheme, which enables first-time buyers to own their own home on a part buy, part rent basis.
Five of the rented properties have been allocated to people with learning difficulties. The borough has commissioned a floating support service for these tenants, enabling them to live independently in their own homes with support from a community volunteer if needed. The volunteer will also live on site.
Vanquish Close, Whitton
Notting Hill Housing Trust worked in partnership with the Council to deliver this new housing development in Whitton. The development provides a mixture of 35 new homes for social rent and shared ownership allocated to Richmond residents. A number of the units are for families and have private gardens. The development is a 5 minute walk from Whitton High Street and the amenities in the local area. This scheme was completed in early 2008.
Rodney Road, Whitton
In December 2007, Stadium Housing Association completed an affordable housing scheme in Whitton, made up of family-sized rented apartments. The scheme is in close proximity to amenities in Whitton and has regular public transport links.
With funding from the council, a total of 20 units were being built on this site, being 11 three-bedroom apartments and 9 two-bedroom apartments. The development meets the EcoHomes ‘Good’ rating and will obtain Secured by Design certification.
A relatively new method of construction has been used on this scheme, whereby each apartment arrives on site in two factory-made volumetric units. These units contain fittings and finishes, and just require a final connection of all the services (such as plumbing and electrics) before they are decorated and ready for habitation.
All of the units were allocated to Homeless families and people on the Richmond Housing Waiting list
The Stoop housing development
The Stoop was completed in late 2006. It is an innovative new housing development in landscaped grounds on the site of Twickenham Rugby Stadium. The development consisted of 67 flats, with 24 for affordable housing. Of these, 18 for rent and 6 for shared ownership, and seven of the flats were built to wheelchair adaptable standards. The flats achieved an Ecohomes rating of very good, a rating systems for new builds taking into account climate change, resource use and impacts on wildlife. Bishops Grove, Hampton
This development completed in September 2006 and provided new homes for keyworker rent. The scheme is located in a residential leafy area in Hampton, containing several playing fields and is close to schools, bus routes and amenity stores. The properties include a mixture of seven 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments over three floors.
