Domestic abuse

What is domestic abuse?

The Domestic Abuse Forum in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames uses following definition of domestic abuse:

"Any actual or threatened form of physical, sexual or emotional abuse which may also include economic control and social isolation, often a combination of all five; which takes place within the context of adult family members or within a close relationship between partners (married, cohabiting or otherwise) or ex-partners of either or the same gender."

Domestic abuse takes the form of power and control exerted on one partner by the other partner.

Children are affected by domestic abuse too and this raises domestic violence as a child protection issue.

Practitioners may also wish to visit the Greater London Domestic Violence Project. This website contains many links to useful sites, including that of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) domestic abuse forum.
