Richmond Family Link
Short break care for disabled children - make a difference
The Short Break Care Team is actively recruiting Family Link carers who are able to offer day time visits or overnight stays to disabled children and young people.
Family Link
The scheme, known as Richmond Family Link, offers short breaks to disabled children and young people up to the age of 18. This is a positive experience for everyone. There are opportunities for children to make new friends and perhaps do different activities. It allows time for parents to catch up with other things or just relax, and a chance for Family Link carers to get involved in a local scheme, learn new skills and have some fun. Family Link carers are assessed and approved by the local authority before children can have day time visits or overnight stays.
Who can use the service?
The children who are referred to Family Link live with their families in Richmond Borough. They may have learning or physical disabilities, sensory impairments, social and communication difficulties and some may have additional health needs.
Who can become a Family Link carer?
You need to enjoy being with children and preferably have some relevant experience. You need to have the time and energy to make a regular commitment, for example, a day time visit or an overnight stay at least once a month. You need to live in or close to Richmond Borough and you must be willing to have an assessment which includes references, checks and a medical. We welcome single people, couples and families from all ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. A sense of humour goes a long way!
Family Link carers say:
“Marie and I spend time doing all sorts of activities. It’s good seeing her develop. It’s very rewarding and satisfying.”
“Time really flies when Saleem is with us. We organise activities in advance which our children also enjoy, such as swimming and the cinema, so it’s rewarding for the whole family.”
Will I receive payment?
All Family Link carers are paid an allowance to cover the costs of having a child to visit or stay overnight. This is £9.69 per hour for day care and approximately £99.00 for an overnight stay.
What support can I expect?
You will have a link worker who will introduce you to the child and their family, arrange introductory visits and set up the link. Your link worker will offer ongoing support through regular phone calls and visits to your home. Links are reviewed regularly and this is an opportunity for everyone to say how things are working out. We organise training events throughout the year where you can meet other Family Link carers.
