Why do children need adopting?

There are many reasons why some children cannot be brought up by their birth families. Most of the children who are adopted have experienced some kind of neglect or abuse and have been placed for adoption through the court system, rather than being voluntarily given up for adoption by their birth parents. There may have been concerns about parental substance misuse, domestic violence or mental health problems.

Children waiting to be adopted have often had difficult and traumatic early lives and may have experienced several moves prior to being adopted. Reading about the experiences that some children in care have faced can be daunting, but adopters are given a lot of support and preparation in order to meet the challenge of adoption. These children all share a need for the love, support and stability that adoptive parents can offer.
