Transport Schemes for people with sight loss

Local Travel Schemes

  • Taxicard, taxi vouchers, Blind Person’s Freedom Pass and mobility buses. Contact the Accessible Transport Unit to discuss eligibility and to request an application form on 020 8831 6312/6191/6097 or email. accessibletransport@richmond.gov.uk
  • Dial-a-Ride is a door-to-door transport service for people with mobility problems who are unable to use mainstream public transport services. Contact Dial-a-Ride (Central Centre) on 0845 999 1999.
  • Transport for London (TfL) Travel Assistance Scheme. TfL provides short term assistance of up to 10 sessions to help people gain confidence in accessible public transport to complete journeys. This applies to buses, underground and over ground train services. Contact TfL Travel Assistance Scheme on 020 7027 5822 or email travel.assistance@tfl-buses.co.uk

National Travel Schemes

  • The Blue Badge scheme offers on-street parking allowances to people who are disabled. Contact the Accessible Transport Unit on 020 8831 6312 to discuss eligibility and to request an application form.
  • Disabled Persons Railcard entitles the card holder to discounts on most ticket prices. Full details and application forms are available from staffed railway stations or you can contact National Rail on 0845 605 0525 or visit their website www.disabledpersons-railcard.co.uk
  • Virgin Trains Journey Care Disability Needs can advise on individual station facilities and arrange travel details with the particular railway operating company. Contact them on 0845 748 4950.
  • The RNIB produces a factsheet, ‘Health Benefits: getting help with NHS costs’. For example travel expenses to the hospital. This help is only available to people on a low income. Contact RNIB Helpline on 0845 766 9999.

Transport to hospital appointments

If you need transport to attend a hospital appointment for any department, including the Eye Unit, contact your GP. Your GP will arrange transport to the appointment and home again.
