Benefits for deaf or hard of hearing people

This fact sheet may be useful if:

  • You are employed / unemployed, ill or have a disability and want to know what state benefits are available
  • You need to know what services are available to you to help you claim these benefits

There are many state benefits available to you through Job Centre Plus if you are sick, have a disability, care for someone, are unemployed or on a low wage. You will need to complete a form for each benefit.

Benefits available

DLA (Disability Living Allowance)

This is a non means tested tax free benefit available to those aged under 65 and/or have a particular need due to a disability. You can claim DLA whether you are unemployed or working.

AA (Attendance Allowance)

This is a tax free benefit for those aged 65 or over and have particular needs due to a disability.

Income Support

This benefit is available to those aged 16-59 who are not available to work full time due to illness, a disability or are a lone parent. Savings and working hours will be considered when making a claim. You may also be eligible for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit if you are successful with your claim for Income Support.

Tax Credits

Child Tax Credit (CTC) is a means tested benefit and is available to those responsible for a child or children under 16, attending full time education or an approved training course.

Working Tax Credit (WTC) is a means tested benefit and is available to those on a low income and who are responsible for a child and/or have disability which prevents them from getting employment.
