Self Directed Support

Your Support, Your Way

What is Self Directed Support?

The recent Government White Paper ‘Our Health, Our Care, Our Say’ states services for adults need to:

  • Give people more control over their health and care services
  • Support people with their health, independence and well-being
  • Help people get high quality, cost effective and convenient care quickly

The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames is committed to these principles and has been working with a national organisation called ‘in Control’ to make this a reality.

In February 2007 our borough was selected as one of eight local authority sites to implement the ‘in Control’ model. This is called 'Self Directed Support'.

Self Directed Support is a system for providing social care to people who need it, if it has been agreed that you are eligible for support, following an assessment with Adult and Community Services. It enables you to organise and choose your own support and aims to radically improve the amount of choice and control you and your carers have in the way your needs are met.

Self Directed Support aims to:

  • Increase the choice and control of people using social care services
  • Allocate resources fairly and transparently
  • Improve the quality of services
  • Make better use of resources
