Home care

Adult and Community Services is committed to helping all adults stay as independent as possible, preferably within your own home. If you need help and support to live at home, you should contact the Adult and Community Services Contact Centre

If you need support to live in your own home, you may be eligible for home care.

Types of care

The type of care and support on offer may be:

  • Personal Care - this means things like help with having a bath, getting dressed, getting in and out of bed, using the toilet.
  • Practical Care - this means things like housework, shopping and laundry.

Care is provided by a private home care agency, monitored and approved by the Council.

What do I have to do to get help in my own home?

You should contact your local Social Services Care Team and ask to speak to the Duty Care Manager.

What type of help can I have?

A Care Manager will visit you at home to assess your needs. You may be able to receive help with personal care such as washing, dressing, feeding; and practical help such as housework, shopping, laundry.

Will I have to pay for this help?

Yes, the Care Manager who visits you will ask you to complete a financial assessment form. The form will be treated confidentially and used to assess how much you will be required to pay.

There is more information in the Paying for Care at home section.

Once the help is arranged, how will I know who is coming?

The Home Care Manager will contact you to let you know the days and approximate time of arrival of the Home Care Assistant. Every effort will be made to keep to the same person. If there is a change you will be informed.

How do I make comments about the standard of service?

Our leaflet How to Complain should be given to you at the start of the service. We are pleased to receive your views and will respond openly and fairly. You will not be treated less favourably because of any complaint.

Can you help me if I want to organise my own home care?

If you are assessed as needing care in the home you should be offered the choice of receiving Direct Payments so that you can organise your own home care.

If you do not wish to be assessed or do not wish to disclose your financial details we can give you a factsheet with a list of home care agencies operating in the area so that you can make your own arrangements. You can also get more information about home care agencies from the Commission for Social Care Inspection.
