Moving to another care home

What if I'm not happy in my care home? Can I move to another one?

If we arranged your care home place for you, you will have a meeting with your care manager around 6 weeks after you move into the care home. At this meeting you can let us know if you are happy and want to stay on in the care home. If you are very unhappy and it is not possible to resolve this with the care home, your care manager will help you find another care home. It is also possible at this stage that you may want to return to your own home, and if we think this will be possible we will help you get the support you need to live at home. This is why we never advise anyone to sell or move out of their home until they have been in a care home for more than 6 weeks.

If you have arranged your place in a care home privately you can terminate your contract with the care home, and move somewhere else, although you will usually have to give one month's notice to the care home.

If I want to go into a care home somewhere else in the country, will you still help me make arrangements and do my financial assessment?

Yes - if you live in Richmond upon Thames and we assess you to move into a care home you can choose one anywhere that best suits you and your family.

What if I'm already in a care home but want to move to a care home somewhere else in the country?

If it becomes more suitable for you to move to a care home in a different area, perhaps to be nearer to family or friends, you should discuss this with your care manager at one of your regular review meetings, and they will help you to arrange a move.
