Residential and nursing care homes

Residential and nursing care homes in Richmond upon Thames are not owned by the council. If you are going to live in a residential or nursing care home, you can either enter into a private agreement with the home and pay all the costs yourself, or you can ask us for help.

What is the difference between residential or nursing care home?

We always aim to provide support to allow people to stay in their own homes and remain as independent as possible. However, in some cases this may not be possible any longer, and we would recommend:

  • A residential care home if there are no medical problems that require assistance more than a carer could deal with at home.
  • A nursing care home if there are a number of complex medical problems that require regular assistance from Health Service professionals.

If you are having difficulty with day to day living but are not sure that moving into a care home is the right choice, you should contact Adult and Community Services and ask for an assessment. We may be able to offer you support or equipment to allow you to stay in your own home.
