Urban design
The design of buildings and spaces, whether conserving areas of high quality or improving areas in need of enhancement is the role of Urban Design and Conservation Group.
The Council has a commitment to preserve the special interest, character and setting of the Borough and promote good quality new design.
These include:
Listed buildings

(pdf, 268KB) - Listed Building register
(pdf, 458KB) (updated 8 October 2007) - Listed Building information for new owners
(pdf, 526KB)
Buildings of townscape merit
Article (4) Direction and Conservation Areas
- Article (4) Direction information
(pdf, 211KB) - Article (4) Direction register
(pdf, 76KB) - Conservation Areas
Controls over the demolition of buildings exist, and at times other development, permitted outside conservation areas, is also controlled.
A large number of projects of environmental improvements to Richmond and Twickenham town centres, and along the River Thames are being taken forward.
An independent locally resourced Design Panel to assist the Council in the assessment of significant or sensitive planning proposals and design policies has been running since November 2005. This concept is widely endorsed by Government and professional organisations to raise awareness of good contemporary and well mannered new buildings in local contexts.
