Food waste recycling scheme
It is a very popular scheme and residents are showing great commitment. Thank you!
If you have feedback on the scheme or would like to report a missed collection please telephone 08456 122 660 or report online.
How to use this service:
- To arrange delivery of recycling containers, please use our online form or telephone 08456 122 660. This is a free service.
- Your food waste will be collected weekly, on the same day as your black box and blue bag, but by a different vehicle. To find out when your collection will be, you can search for collection dates.
- Liners for the storage bins can be ordered online and from all local libraries for £1.75 per pack of 20.
- For more information on using this scheme, please telephone 08456 122 660 or email recycling@richmond.gov.uk.
What food can be recycled in this scheme?
If it grows and you can eat it, we can recycle it! Download a quick guide to what you can recycle in the scheme.
| Yes Please | No Thanks |
|---|---|
| Meat, fish and bones | Food cans and jars |
| Bread, pasta and rice | Garden waste |
| Vegetable and fruit waste | Plastic bags - please don't use them as liners |
| Eggs and cheese | Pet faeces |
| Tea bags | Human faeces |
| All cooked and raw foods | Nappies |
To ensure your food waste is collected please leave recycling:
- Out for collection on the same day as your black box and blue bag. Separate vehicles will collect the food waste (as opposed to the paper, glass and cans recycling), so collections will not take place at the same time.
- Out by 6am. The collections start early and pick up times may vary.
- At the edge of your property, by the pavement. We cannot collect it if it is in a porch, side access, or behind a wall. See this picture of where to leave food waste for collection.
- Out for collection in the large storage bin, not in the small kitchen caddie, as the caddie is not securable against animals.
- Do not use a plastic bag as a liner. Plastic cannot be composted.
How much do compostable liners cost and where can I get them from?
Special compostable liners for the larger storage bin are avalible from all borough libraries. These cost £1.75 for 20 liners. We recommend you use one per week to line the main storage bin. The smaller kitchen caddie can easily be washed as often as you want after emptying into the storage bin.
Can I have a second bin?
Yes, if you need an additional bin please telephone 08456 122 660 or use our online form to have one delivered.
