Flats recycling service
Flats recycling pilot scheme launched
A pilot scheme enabling people in flats to recycle cardboard and plastic bottles has been launched by Richmond Council in February 2007, find out more about the pilot scheme here.
About the flats recycling service
The recycling department has expanded its recycling service to include even more multi-occupancy dwellings in the borough. This has been made possible by funding received from the London Recycling Fund.
The scheme has been set up for those who live in blocks of flats with more than 10 units. If you live in a block of flats with less than 10 units you can recycle using the kerbside collection.
Improvements to kerbside recycling and waste collection
For flats that have communal recycling bins, there are no changes in November to the recycling and waste collection service. Find out more about improvements to kerbside recycling and waste collection service here.

Main aims of the service
- To provide convenient, easy to use recycling facilities for people living in the multi-occupancy dwellings in the borough.
- To collect and recycle glass, paper, tins and cans.
- To dramatically increase the tonnage of recycling achieved in the Borough.
Service characteristics
- The typical recycling facility consists of 5 wheeled bins for the recycling of paper, glass (green, brown and clear) and cans.
- The bin lids will be locked to reduce contamination and vandalism. There are small apertures to insert the recyclable materials.
- The recycling service is free; there is no charge for the supply of bins, there is no additional fee for delivery of the bins and the collection service is free also.
- The wheelie bins are placed in the vicinity of the normal domestic refuse bins (or in any other suitable location approved by the managing agent and/or residents).
- Collections are carried out fortnightly (we will provide additional bins if the existing bins become too full during the two week period).
- Food waste recycling collections are not available from flats or Estates where there are 5 or more units. This is due to collection and storage difficulties, but possible solutions are being investigated.
