Blocked drains
Dealing with breaks and blockages
You will usually know when something has gone wrong with your drainage system because your waste will stop going away when you flush the toilet, or gullies outside overflow. Sometimes, if you have a shared sewer, which carries waste away from several houses in a row, your neighbours may know that there is a problem before you do.
Everyone who shares a private sewer (built after 1937) is jointly responsible for sorting it out. This can be very expensive as drains and sewers are situated underground, which means it can be hard to find out what and where the problem is. Check your insurance policies to see if they cover these situations.
We may be able to help you identify where and what the problem with the drain is. We can also help resolve drainage problems affecting several buildings. Usually this means we have to serve a legal notice on those responsible for maintaining the drain or sewer.
