Lead and paint
Lead paint is the main source of lead in older houses. It's estimated that about two-thirds of the homes built before 1940, and one-half of the homes built from 1940 to 1960 have been decorated with lead-based paint (a few homes built in the 60's and early 70's may contain some lead too.)
In recent years added lead has been banned from paint for either interior or exterior use. As the paint cracks and chips, everyone in the house becomes exposed to lead dust and particles. Young children, who are more likely to put their hands and other objects in their mouth, are at greatest risk. Painted exteriors can also produce lead residues in nearby soil.
The Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has produced advice on how to deal with lead paint in older homes.
