Conservation area consultations - complete and current
From time to time conservation areas are extended or new ones introduced. The sub headings on the right hand side of this page give the history of our more recent consultations past and present if applicable.
Conservation Areas were introduced in the Civic Amenities Act of 1967 and an initial series of areas was designated in 1969. The Council has subsequently designated further areas over the years and the boundaries of several areas have been extended.
There are now 72 designated Conservation Areas in Richmond upon Thames.
Conservation Area Studies
The objective of a Conservation Area Study is to provide a clearly defined analysis of the character and appearance and special interest of a conservation area or group of conservation areas which is defensible on appeal, assists in development control decisions and identifies proposals for enhancement or preservation.
A Study is a background supporting document to the Appraisal Statements for each conservation area. Conservation Area Studies have been subject to public consultation before adoption by the Council. Over time they will be reviewed and combined with the Appraisal Statements to form one ‘Character Appraisal and Management Plan’ for each individual conservation area.
