Garden ponds

Do you have a garden pond?

The Amphibian Species Action Plan is currently being developed to provide protection for the Borough’s frogs, toads and newts. The amphibian group would be very interested to hear from you if you have a garden pond that supports any amphibians, or if you know of any other local sites of particular interest.

Common lizards, slow-worms, common toads and grass snakes have declined across much of our urban environment, but find pockets of suitable habitat on open, sunny, grassy sites. Froglife a national charity established in 1989 recognizes that allotment sites across London have immense value for wildlife.

In conjunction with Froglife, we will be running training days for volunteers to survey allotment sites and to find out about amphibians and reptiles living there, and to add to our understanding as to the features that make these sites so valuable. If you are interested in getting involved and would like to do this work on a voluntary basis, we will provide training in species identification and survey techniques, and provide survey forms for completion.

For more information, or if you would like to take part in this voluntary work, please contact the Parks Team.
