Youth, get in the know

Outskirts magazine

Outskirts to go online-only

Outskirts is the borough’s quarterly youth magazine that is written by young people for young people.

It's produced by a team of young people aged 11 to 19 who meet every week  to plan, write and design the next edition. The young team is made up of journalists and photographers from all over the borough.

The magazine looks at major issues that matter to local young people. Recently it was decided that due to pressures on the Council’s finances the magazine would no longer be printed. However, with your support, we would like Outskirts to continue and be an electronic publication.

Can you help?

This can only happen if we can find a local professional graphic designer to come forward and offer their time to help the young people. The main costs of the magazine are the design costs which the Council cannot afford to meet in the current financial climate. The designer should be willing to help produce four editions of the magazine, alongside the young people on the editorial team. If you think you can help work on the publication email: e.ridgeway@richmond.gov.uk

Working on the magazine

We are currently looking for new members of the Outskirts Team. Are you aged 11-19? Do you live in, work in or study in Richmond upon Thames? Do you care about where you live? This is your chance to shape and inform what other young people are thinking!

We have a number of positions available on the magazine – including:

  • Reporters – doing interviews and writing articles
  • Photographers – taking all the photographs in the magazine
  • Sponsorship officers – helping to find sponsorship for the magazine and organising competitions and discounts for readers.
  • Web editors – to help keep the Outskirts web page up to date with the latest news, events and information.
  • Researchers – putting together story ideas for future editions, arranging interviews for the reporters and helping to find all the events in the borough for young people.

We also have a rolling editor position for the magazine, so everybody can take turns in being ‘in charge’.

If you want to take part, take a look at the job description(pdf, 31KB) below and complete the application form (Word version (MS Word, 933KB) for electronic completion or Adobe Acrobat(pdf, 50KB) version to complete by hand)
