Who sits on the Governing Body?

The governing body is made up of:

  • Parent governors (elected by parents of the school);
  • Staff representatives (elected by school staff);
  • The Headteacher;
  • Local authority governors (appointed by the local authority);
  • Community governors (members of the local community appointed by the governing body);
  • For some schools, people appointed by the relevant religious body or foundation; and
  • Up to two sponsor governors (appointed by the governing body).

The numbers in each category vary depending on the size of the school. Appointments are usually for four years.
