Education of looked after children
Education Support Team of children looked after
The work of the team is reported to the Children and Young Peoples Strategic Partnership. Its main aim is to advocate and advise young people, parents, schools and carers about the need to work collaboratively. This is to ensure that children in care are given the sameopportunities as other children and any specific needs they have are addressed to enhance their life chances. There is an annual education plan that sets out our targets, priorities and key activities.
The core services include
- Advocacy, support and advice on educational issues of Children Looked After.
- Maintenance of the Education Database, including information on attendance and attainment.
- Training and dissemination of information about the educational needs of Children Looked After
- Monitoring the effectiveness of Personal Education Plans (PEPs)
- Additional educational packages to support individual need
- Education surgery
Specific projects aimed at increasing the levels of literacy and educational outcomes.
A key principle is that unless key professionals work together, children and young people will not be able to fulfil their potential.
