Registered childminders

What is a childminder?

Childminders look after up to six children under the age of eight years old in their own homes.

When do childminders operate?

Childminders are self-employed, and therefore decide on what hours and conditions they work in. This means that childminders are often flexible on the times which they are available to work.

Where are childminders located?

Childminders look after children in their own homes and are located throughout the borough.

Are childminders registered?

Childminders have to be reigstered by Ofsted. The registration process involves an inspection of the premises from which they operate and an inspection of their ability as a childminder.

Childminding inspection reports are available online on the Ofsted webpage. Childminders are listed according to their Ofsted reference number. These numbers are not available on the childcare search engines online. To obtain the unique reference number, you will have to contact the Family Information Service on 020 8831 6298, or ask the childminders themselves.

Where can I find out more?

The NCMA is the National Childminding Association. For information about childminders visit the NCMA website or contact the association by telephone at 0800 169 4486.

Lists of childminders can be found online on the following websites:

'Looking for Childcare' is a very useful leaflet that is produced by surestart that has information about all types of childcare including childminders.
