Every Child a Talker

Every Child a Talker (ECAT) aims to:

  • Improve the knowledge, skills and expertise of the early years workforce in supporting early language development
  • Encourage best practice in supporting children under five in acquiring robust speech, language and communication skills
  • Raise the understanding and expertise of early years practitioners and equip them with the broad range of skills and knowledge needed to work with both children and with parents
  • Create an enriched language environment within settings
  • Increase the involvement of parents in their children’s learning leading to stronger home learning environments

The programme in the Borough started in April 2010 with 20 settings participating. We are now embarking on Phase 2, which will involve another 20 settings and the Children’s Centres.

As part of this programme we are sending out weekly Talking Tips to all early years practitioners. The tips may provide new ideas or act as reminders of how to support children’s speech, language and communication development. In either case we hope that as early years practitioners, you will find them useful and that you will share them with your colleagues and parents.

The ECaT programme focuses on children between the ages of 2-4, however the majority of the tips will be relevant for children outside of this age-range.
