Greater London Authority (GLA)
The GLA is the strategic citywide government for London. It is made up of a directly elected Mayor - the Mayor of London - and a separately elected Assembly - the London Assembly.
The GLA has responsibilities in the following areas: transport, planning, economic development and regeneration, the environment, police, fire and emergency planning, and culture.
It was set up under the Greater London Authority Act 1999.
The Mayor of London
The Mayor sets out plans and policies for London covering transport, buildings and land use, economic development and regeneration, culture, and a range of environmental issues including biodiversity, ambient noise, waste disposal and air quality.
The Mayor also directs the GLA and sets budgets for the GLA, Transport for London, the London Development Agency, the Metropolitan Police and London's fire services.

The London Assembly
The Assembly scrutinises the Mayor's activities, questioning the Mayor about his or her decisions. The Assembly is also able to investigate other issues of importance to Londoners, publish its findings and recommendations, and make proposals to the Mayor.
The London Assembly is elected at the same time as the Mayor and comprises 25 elected members. Of these, 11 are elected on a London wide basis and 14 are elected as Constituency Assembly members, each representing a separate area of London (each constituency is made up of two or three complete London boroughs). GLA elections
Elections for the Mayor of London and local London Assembly Member take place every four years; the next will be in 2012.
In order to vote in the GLA Elections you must ensure that you are on the electoral register.
