Proxy votes
You can only vote by proxy if your name is listed on the current electoral roll.
Please ensure applications are sent to us immediately to avoid missing statutory deadlines.
Voting by proxy
If you cannot attend your polling station on election day, and voting by post is not appropriate for you, you can apply to vote by proxy (providing you do so in time).
This is simply appointing someone you know to vote on your behalf, and telling them who to vote for. Your proxy should be someone who qualifies to vote in the election themselves (for example over 18 and a British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen for a General Election), and they cannot be proxy for more than 2 people who are not family members.
To be valid for just a specific election, you will need to give the reason why you are applying.
To set this up on a permanent basis, you will also need someone to support your application such as a Doctor or your employer.
If your proxy knows in advance that they cannot get to your allocated polling station, they should apply in good time to vote on your behalf by post.
Absent voting
The Government introduced new legislation in 2007 to increase the security of absent voting. Every new application to vote by proxy must include the applicant's signature and date of birth to be valid, as well as the reason a proxy vote is required.
We cannot accept proxy applications if this information is not given.
Please contact us for a proxy application form and guidance as to how to complete it.
