Eligible electors

You must be over 16 years old to go onto the Register of Electors and 18 years of age or older to vote.

The following list shows the nationalities of residents here eligible to vote in all elections (British, Irish Commonwealth countries and British Dependent Territories). Also listed are European Union countries whose citizens may vote in local elections (and EU Parliament elections upon application).

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Channel Islands, Isle of Man

British Dependencies and Overseas Territories

Anguilla, Bermuda, British Antarctic Territory, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Hong Kong*, Montserrat, Pitcairn Island, St Helena, and Dependencies, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands

* Majority of Hong Kong citizens were previously British Dependent Territory (BDT) citizens until it ceased to be a BDT in 1997. They are now British Nationals (Overseas) or British Overseas citizens, so "Commonwealth citizens" as defined by the British Nationality Act 1981.

Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brunei Darussalam, Cameroon, Canada, Cyprus, Dominica, Fiji Islands, The Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenadines, Samoa, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

European Union citizens

Entitled to vote in Local Elections (and EU Parliament on application)

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.

(Citizens of Cyprus, Ireland, and Malta qualify to vote in all elections).
