Annual Canvass voter registration
Annual Household Registration 2008
The "Annual Canvass of Electors" starts in August each year with compulsory registration forms delivered to every residential property in our borough. These are addressed to "The Current Occupier", and if details of previous occupants are pre-printed, you must clearly delete them and add your own.
The revised Register of Electors ("Electoral Roll") is then published on 1 December, using this up to date information from every home.
The way to keep or add your name on the Register of Electors is to make sure your details are correct on this annual form. On it must be listed the names of everyone living in your household aged 16 and above, stating each nationality (or dual nationalities if applicable). Even if you do not think any residents are eligible, you must still complete, sign and return it.
By law everyone must renew their registration every year, including all currently registered and pre-printed on the form, and even if your household completed individual forms during the year.
Registration renewal by phone/online is now closed. This is only available from September to November, at any other times individual signed applications must be received
Note that paying Council Tax does not register you to vote, electoral information is a separate record.
Tenants and lodgers permanently living at each address must be included as the register is of all qualifying residents- it is not concerned with who owns each property.
If you do not respond to the Annual Registration form:
- You will not appear on the list of people allowed to vote.
- If forms are not received back we now have to call at your property in person to confirm the details of current occupants.
- You will not be on the list given to credit reference agencies, which may damage your ability to obtain credit, open bank accounts, prove your identity and access services;
- You may be fined up to £1000, as it is an offence to refuse to register or to intentionally give false information.
