Voter Survey results
Thank you for the record number of 787 responses in our survey of electors received as of 24 June. Many commented on the size of the ballot papers, and the lack of information on parties and candidates; and although we have no control over these issues, we have passed these on to the relevant authorities.
- 99% strongly agreed that their Polling Station was in a suitable venue.
- 100% strongly agreed that Polling Staff were helpful and well informed.
About the European Parliamentary election
In a European Parliamentary election each party puts forward a regional list of candidates, so you can vote for one of these parties or for an individual candidate standing as an independent. MEPs are elected on a regional basis through proportional representation so numbers depend on the overall share of votes that each party receives.
London elects eight of these members on a party list system where each voter selects a political party or independent candidate and the eight seats are distributed in proportion to the votes cast over the whole of London.
This will be the biggest trans-national election in history for the world’s only directly elected transnational and multilingual parliament. Elected by the people since 1979, European Parliament is the EU's only directed elected institution and represents almost half a billion citizens. It is made up of 736 Members (MEPs) elected by 27 EU countries every five years. In the UK, there are 12 European electoral regions represented by between three and ten MEPs making a total of 72 MEPs.

General Elections
The last UK Parliamentary "General" election was on 5 May 2005, the next is due by 2010, but could be called at any time with as little as 17 working days notice.
By-elections and referendums may also occur at short notice so ensure you are currently registered to vote.
The last Local Council election was on 4 May 2006 when Richmond Council was elected for the next 4 years until May 2010.
The Mayor of London and London Assembly elections were held on 1 May 2008, and are next due in May 2012.
For details of how to register to vote, or update your details having changed address, please visit our Registration page.
If you are on the current Register Of Electors and do not wish to vote in person at a Polling Station, you can contact us for an application to vote by post.
Your electoral registration must be renewed every year using the compulsory annual registration form sent to your house each Autumn. Paying council tax does not register you to vote as the records are based on different criteria (most residents must pay council tax but only residents with certain nationalities may register to vote).
