Continuing Care Scrutiny Task Group
Purpose of the Task Group
Continuing Care is a generic term for long-term health and social care for elderly and disabled people. Services provided to people who meet the fully-funded NHS Continuing Care criteria have historically mainly consisted of a place in a long stay hospital or a care home. However, recent practice is focusing on providing more care in the individual’s own home. Strategic Health Authorities were supposed to have had criteria for all three care levels drawn up by April 2004. There is currently partial agreement to the criteria for Older People. Further work is underway to clarify funding responsibility (NHS/local authority) for people with a learning disability, people with a mental health problem and children. The South West London Strategic Health Authority is also reviewing the older people policy after a year’s implementation. While much of this has to be decided across the boroughs covered by the South-West London Strategic Health Authority, there is scope for the implementation of the policy at local authority level. There is therefore be a role for a Scrutiny Task Group to look at e.g. the functioning of the Continuing Care Panel.
