About the Twickenham Riverside site
The Twickenham Riverside
(pdf, 114KB) site owned by the Council is the site of the old Twickenham Pool. It is bounded by Water Lane and Wharf Lane and close to Eel Pie Island. A small part of the site (about 20%) was put into use in 2004 as a temporary playground and café, pending a full redevelopment scheme for the whole site.

The site of the old Twickenham open air swimming pool has been largely derelict since it was closed 29 years ago and has defeated the efforts of successive Councils to come up with a plan that was right for the area.
The scheme
The Council’s aim is to create a well designed, sustainable scheme that enhances the riverside and boosts the viability of Twickenham town centre. New open space will form the largest component of the scheme and include a new, permanent children’s play area. There will be a new River Centre managed by the Environment Trust for Richmond upon Thames. Some private housing at the rear of the site will provide the funding for the community facilities and improving the embankment area in front of the site.

Twickenham Riverside has been a contentious issue for many years and the Council is now determined to bring the years of dereliction to an end and to take forward this new scheme with its significant community benefits secured at no capital cost to local taxpayers.
