World Sight Day celebrated
World Sight Day is being celebrated in the borough on Friday, 9 October, with an event showcasing the latest technology and professional advice for people with visual impairments.
The day, which is being held at the Sheen Lane Centre in East Sheen, is being hosted by Richmond Council and run by the Visually Impaired Society of Richmond (VISOR). Representatives from over 40 organisations will be on hand to answer questions and provide information.
Among the equipment on show will be Sat Navs for walkers and a device that converts text into audio.
Cllr Denise Carr, Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Housing on Richmond Council, said:
“Many people will experience some form of visual impairment during their lifetime so it’s important they know of the services that can help.
“This event will be a good chance to find out what is on offer, particularly some of the latest technology, and to get advice and information from experts.
“If you are concerned about your sight, or are looking for help or advice, I encourage you to contact our Sensory Services Team.”
The Council’s Sensory Services Team work with people over the age of 18 who are blind, partially sighted, deaf or hard of hearing.
They offer general advice on coping with sight loss, provide assessments and organise specialist equipment, training and support.
Visually Impaired Society of Richmond (VISOR) works on behalf of residents with visual impairments. They work out of the Sheen Lane Centre on Monday (10am-4pm) and the Disability Advice Centre on Waldegrave Road on Wednesdays (10am-4pm). For more details contact Bob Burgess on 020 8487 5301.
World Sight Day is an annual event aimed at raising awareness of blindness, visual impairment and rehabilitation. This year the focus is on eye health and equal access care.
The event is free and runs from 10.30am-4pm.
