Release Date: 08/10/2009
This October will see the borough’s annual celebration of Black History Month, with a packed schedule of events inspired by Black and Minority Ethnic culture.
Local libraries will lead the way with a variety of workshops available throughout the month, including African dance, martial arts, massage and textiles. People are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.
Local schools and youth centres will also be hosting events, including a theatre road show, which will see pupils create performances based on the lives of Black historical heroes. Involving drama and music, the finale will be held at the Powerstation Youth Centre on Mortlake High Street, in late October.
Cllr Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure on Richmond Council, said:
“Black History Month is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the history of Britain’s Black and Minority Ethnic community. The library events and workshops are an excellent opportunity for you, your family and friends to enjoy learning new dance, music and craft skills, while the theatre performance from our local schools promises to be great entertainment.
“London is one of the most successful multicultural capitals in the world and the month of activities is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate this. I hope as many people as possible join in the fun.”
In addition to the classes, the Library Service is launching a photography competition, with entries being asked to submit photos that celebrate diversity in the borough.
There are categories for aged 14 and under and 15 and over. Entries need to be submitted by 12 October 2009.
Black History Month is an annual event and has been celebrated around the country for the last 30 years. For more details www.blackhistorymonthuk.co.uk/.
