RISE event success

Over 70 people took part in a day of sports at St Mary’s University College on 3 October, as part of the borough’s third RISE (Richmond upon Thames Inclusive Sports and Exercise) event, which promotes sports and exercise for disabled people.

The day, run by Richmond Council, included wheelchair basketball, trampolining, dance, Boccia, aerobics and football, for people of all ages. Coaches and instructors were on hand from local clubs and organisations to support those taking part.

Eighteen people also completed a Sports Coach UK workshop, which gave guidance on working with disabled sports people.

Cllr Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure on Richmond Council, said:

The event was a fantastic success, with a variety of activities on offer. I’m particularly pleased there was such a good turnout, which is testament to how RISE has progressed.

“We are looking to build on this success and I’d encourage anyone interested in taking part in inclusive or disability sports and exercise, as a participant, coach or volunteer to contact our Sports Development Team.”
