Hundreds of personal alarms are being made available free to young women in the borough following the four attacks in Richmond Upon Thames and Hounslow.
Richmond Council has been working with the police and other partners in the Community Safety Partnership to provide advice and practical help. They are giving the alarms out from the Civic Centre reception in York Street, Twickenham, and from the town’s police station which is open 24-hours-a-day
All Council staff have been briefed, including Parks Patrol officers, who work the borough’s park areas during the evenings, and who have been given the suspect’s description. They, and youth service staff also have a number of alarms which can be given out to young women.
A briefing has been circulated to all state and private schools in Richmond Upon Thames, as well as to Richmond College, to make pupils aware of what is happening. It will also give advice on how they can best protect themselves.
Anne Lawtey, the Council’s Community Safety Partnership Manager said: “Richmond Upon Thames is still the safest borough in London, and ‘stranger rape’ attacks are extremely rare, but the partnership has acted quickly to do everything we can to ensure young women are protected.
Mrs Lawtey added: “Women should plan their route home in advance trying to walk or travel with people they know. When possible, they should stick to routes where other people are and avoid short cuts in lonely places such as alleyways and parks keeping to well-lit main roads.”
Further advice is available on the Community Safety Partnership’s web pages.
