Lowest paid staff receive pay boost
Richmond Council will be providing it's lowest paid staff with a one-off payment of up to £250, following a decision agreed at last night’s Cabinet meeting.
Members have agreed to award the 350 non-school Council employees who earn less than £21,000 a year up to £250.
The payment comes after the Government made a commitment in their Budget earlier this year that staff in the Civil Service, the NHS and teachers, who earn a full-time equivalent of £21,000 or less will receive an increase. However, this Central Government offer was not extended to local government staff.
Cllr Geoffrey Samuel, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said:
“As the amount of funding Council’s receive has been steadily shrinking over the past few years we have worked hard to make the significant savings required to ensure that we can still deliver quality services for our residents. However, whilst we have always been very clear about our plans, we have acknowledged that it hasn’t been easy for Council staff and none have received a pay rise in three years.
“The Council has rightly recognised that we need to keep staff motivated to deliver ever improving services. Therefore alongside the national commitment to award a pay increase to Civil Servants, this is our contribution to supporting the lowest paid Council colleagues during these difficult economic times.”
